Detective Conan Dubbed episodes for August.

 My prediction of what episodes would be included in the second half of the FBI collection were partly correct but not entirely.

If I have any criticism it's the decision to pronounce Yaiba as Yaiber. 

Now that I'm 40 I have to side with Yukiko about her being called old.

The Gunma detective makes i think his first apperence in this Dub.  And while we had heard Sato before this drop contains contains one she plays a prominent role in finally.  Once again the Nano casting is perfect.

The episode it chose to end on is a good episode, it's a Columbo case and a rare example of one where Conan doesn't tranquilize anyone but simply nudged Kogoro in the right direction.

But given the theme of this collection it felt incredibly random. They really should have included The Convivence Store Trap.

Batman has never been The World’s Greatest Detective on The Big Screen.

I know I’ve said this before, but I want to make this point the focus for a change.

The reason it so annoys me when part of the hype for Matt Reeves’ The Batman is it supposedly being the first Batman movie to really showcase Batman as a detective is that the same promise was made by The Dark Knight back in 2008 and as much as I love that film having for a long time called it the greatest movie ever made, it failed to deliver on that promise and so did The Batman. 

I don’t care that these two films have scenes that carry the aesthetic of an Investigation.  Batman doesn’t deduce anything until it’s too late, in one the villain never had a secret identity and in the other that identity was never uncovered prior to him being arrested exactly when he planned to be arrested. 

The pseudo Detective Film qualities of The Batman are because of what it inherited from what pre 2010 Fan Trailers thought Nolan’s take on The Riddler would be, a cringe awkward mashing together of Se7ev, Zodiac and Saw.

These kinds of Batman stories give you the edging of a detective story, but not the happy ending where the Great Detective actually outsmarts the criminal or exposes their perfect crime they thought was unsolvable. These are stories that make a point out of Batman’s victory being hollow or pyrrhic so much that in-spite of the nominal stopping of the villain’s plan it still feels firmly like the Hero was the one outsmarted every step of the way. 

I’ve been thoroughly spoiled what for a Detective Story that also works as a satisfying Action film can be by the fact that I’ve seen all the Detective Conan films (well not the most recent since it’s still in Theaters in Japan).

I am the kind of Conan fan who sometimes complains about how the Conan films have become more Action oriented over time.  But make no mistake, I think even the most overly action bloated, explosion heavy and dumb Detective Conan film (Movie 16 The Eleventh Striker) is still a more satisfying Detective story then any live action Batman movie has ever been. 

And at their best the Detective Conan films are better Detective movie/Action movie hybrids then even the RDJr Sherlock Holmes movies. The top tier of Conan movies I view as movies 1, 3, 4 and 5, the next tier just below them are 7-9 and 11-12.  I also think movie 14 Lost Ship in The Sky makes a better Die Hard sequel than any actual Die Hard sequels and movie 18 The Dimensional Sniper was a great Swan Song for the guy who wrote 14 of the first 18 movies. 

If I had to pick an absolute favorite from that top tier of films, I’ve gone back and forth between picking the third movie The Last Wizard of The Century and the fifth movie Countdown to Heaven. 

The fourth movie Captured In Her Eyes is one I know some would criticize for not giving the audience a fair shot at figuring it out themselves, but as I’ve said many times that’s not what I care about in a Detective Story. What matters here is it does it feel like the villain was outsmarted in the end and not beaten ONLY by brute force. This movie is also the most like a Film Noir of any Detective Conan movies which is relevant to another claim people keep making about The Batman.

The first film, The Time Bombed Skyscraper, you could argue has the opposite problem, I don’t see anyone guessing wrong about who the villain is. But that goes to show that you can have a satisfying Detective Film in the way I’m talking about even if the villain is an established member of Batman’s Rogues gallery. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s obvious to the audience who the villain if because he shares a name with a villain from the Comics, or the film was promoted partially on seeing this A List Actor play this Iconic villain, what matters is does Batman figure out who they are on his own or does the villain just reveal himself after jerking Batman around all film.

None of the ones I just singled out are the most accessible to watch legally in the United States right now, and I recently learned I can’t even count on the BangZoom dubbed movies I paid for to stay on Amazon PrimeVideo. The first 6 movies were dubbed by Funimation but aren't legally streaming anywhere, they all had DVD releases but they are out of print and so might be pretty expensive now.  Movies 7-18 have never had an English Dub release and have only ever been legally Subbed in the US when they were each temporarily on YouTube for a week last year. 

But perhaps none of the theatrically released Detective Conan films are the purest of detective films. Perhaps what people really want from a movie length detective story is something more like the 2 hour special episodes of the series, some of which are now part of the collections of episodes on Netflix.  

But also the 2014 feature length TV Special The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa is pretty great. It’s not afraid to move slowly at first, or be minimalist in its use of music.  And it contains one of my favorite Ran moments, which since we’re comparing them to Batman movies here I will say feels very Denny O’Niel.

Are animated Batman movies better Detective stories?  Some of them by a little bit, when the villain isn’t a standard rogue but someone special for that film. Mask of The Phantasm, Under The Red Hood, kind of Batman Beyond Return of The Joker and Mystery of The Batwoman.  But just like The Dark Knight and The Batman they are often too fixated on making Batman’s Victory not very victorious. Batman The Brave and The Bold’s Scooby Doo Crossover film is somehow actually the best Batman movie at being a Detective movie.  

Another incorrectly named Detective Conan Collection on Netflix.

It should be named The Vermouth Arc because it's real purpose is finally filling in what they skipped in the first collection. I wish they could have just added these to that.

My nitpicking the presentation aside, they are all episodes I'm glad to see Dubbed finally and as usual this Cast Dubs them all excellently. It's also nice to finally have one with no extra long episodes and thus an episode count that doesn't look deceptively underwhelming

This was half episodes that barely if at all feature FBI characters, and for the ones that do it's a kind of a spoiler to be advertising them as FBI episodes, these are all from before that was supposed to be known. When they announced the new collection will be FBI themed I expected a few of these but mostly episodes continuing after 425. But this is for the best, those post 425 episodes should be part of a future Collection branded as The Clash of Red and Black.

I'm glad the Nano voice for Sonoko of finally got to do a Deduction show. And I'm pleasantly surprised Higo's introduction got to make a collection at all.

The case this batch ended on is the first case in this Dub that I hadn't already seen in it's entirety before.  It's a good case, some unique non standard tension that makes it stand out. 

After ending where it did, I'm now expecting the second Cour of this collection to open on Contact with The Black Organization and then include both Four Porsches and The Connivence Store Trap, and I'm hoping at least also the Hidden Bathroom Secret. After that it could go either way on just being the other 2003 Vermouth Arc episodes or including some episode following it's finale.  Episode 346-347 is easy to dismiss as a mere aftermath episode but it is the episode that properly reveals certain things. And Aftermath episodes are fun.

Based on the pattern of how the last collection was released, I'm expecting July 1st to be one the second half drops.  But I do hope it can happen sooner after having to wait so long for the 3rd Collection.

And then there is the matter of the Watch order.  I may add a more refined update on this later, or link to someone laying it out well if I find one. But the gist is...

The first case of this collection should be watched before The Desperate Revival.

The second case in it between where the Rivals Collection ends and The Mysterious Passenger.

The next 3 cases between The Mysterious Passenger and The New York Case.

And the last case after the New York Case.

The Vermouth Arc was the best Era of the Detective Conan Anime.

Interestingly I could almost argue that this Arc’s Kishotenketsu structure correlates to its episodes that aired in Gregorian Calendar years 2001-2004. 

Of course 2000 can be argued to already be part of the Vermouth era.  The character of Vermouth is technically introduced in episodes 176-178 Reunion with The Black Organization in January of 2000. And then 188-193 The Desperate Rival can be considered connected to it. But that's all stage setting, you could follow the storyline of the Vermouth Arc proper without really having seen them. Heck a 1999 episode is arguably more relevant to the plot 170-171 The Blind Spot in the Darkness. 

I will be mentioning some episodes I like from this era that aren't part of the Arc, but I still haven’t seen every episode even in this area so my knowledge is incomplete. 

2001 contains the Ki of the arc.

The year opens with Episode 219 The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs Vaitou Kid. It's not part of the Arc at hand but is important for other reasons. 

226-227 The Battle Game Trap is perhaps still just stage setting like the 2000 episodes, but the character it introduces is very important. 

Not relevant to the arc but 228-229 The Murderous Pottery Class is one of the show’s best Columbo episodes. 

2001’s film was the first and for a while only movie featuring the Black Organization, Countdown to Heaven.  Neither Vermouth or any other distinctly Vermouth arc characters are in it, but it’s also the best Haibara movie and does a good job at setting up where she is as a character when we enter this saga.  

230-231 The Mysterious Passenger is the episode that properly initiates the storyline, it establishes a key aspect of how Vermouth operates we didn’t know about before so it can then introduce three suspects for who among those the main cast interacts with she could be. It’s also one of only three Cases from this arc included in Netflix’s Black Organization Collection and thus with an official Dub.

253-254 Metropolitan Police Love Story 4 is the only chapter in that ongoing storyline also tied into the arc since two of the suspects appear in it. 

258-259 The Man from Chicago introduces another relevant character. Putting all the pieces finally on the board. 

The 2002 episodes are the Sho, further developing what the Ki introduced. 

271-271 The Secret Rushed Omission.

275-275 Truth of the Haunted House features characters but is perhaps not too relevant. 

277-278 English Teacher vs Great Western Detective.

279-280 Hooligan’s Labyrinth is an often overlooked important episode to Hiabara’s character development. 

284-285 Chinatown Deja Vu in the Rain sets the stage for the following episode. 

286-287 Shinichi Kudo’s New York Murder Case is the second case of this Arc included on Netflix. 

That’s all the key Vermouth Arc episodes of 2002.  301-302 near the end of the year is a neat informal continuation of the Sato and Takagi storyline. Episode 303 is a TV Original but I like it as a stand out Mitsuhiko episode. 

The movie for 2002 was The Phantom of Baker Street which I have mixed feelings on. I ultimately rank it among the lowest but there is stuff I like in its first half. It’s interesting in how it was the last film to be Cel Animated and is an early example of a trapped in VR Video Game from the same year as .hack//Sign and the original SAO web novel.

2002’s OVA was the second one, 16 Suspects. Which is a neat relic of how Shiratori was characterized early on that I think has maybe been forgotten. 

I began writing this just as an argument for 2003 being the best year of the Detective Conan Anime. The year began with episode 304 The Trembling Police Headquarters: The 12 Million Hostages, which was a special two hour long episode. During this era Detective Conan began most years with a 2 hour special so that isn’t unique and this isn’t the best of them, but it’s also far from the least which is impressive since none are bad. 

Remember those rants I did on how much of the Vermouth Arc was skipped by the Netflix collection?  Well it turns out a lot of the most important stuff that should have been included aired in 2003. The important plot developments here are the Ten. 

To list them again those episodes are.

307-308 On The Trail of a Silent Witness.

307-311 Contact with The Black Organization. 

329-330 A Friendship can’t be Bought. 

335-336 Secret of the Tohto Film Development Studio

338-339 The Four Porches. 

340-341 Hidden Bathroom Secret. 

343-344 The Convenience Store Trap. Which were also the last episodes to air in 2003. 

So basically Netflix skipped an entire Act of the storyline.

I haven’t seen every episode from 2003. It looks like there were some Heiji cases, and an Eri appearance and some other fun filler episodes. 

331-332 The Suspicious Spicy Curry is on my probably still incomplete list of Columbo episodes. 

The movie for 2003 was the 7th Crossroad of The Ancient Capital. It was the first to be Digitally Animated and the last directed by Kenji Kodama who did all of them before this. It’s the first movie where Heiji and Kazuha are co-leads for the entire film. It’s pretty good. 

The Annual OVA for 2003 was also a Heiji and Kazuha one. 

And then the two and a half hour finale of the arc that opened 2004 is the Ketsu.  Episode 345 Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night. This episode is dubbed on Netflix, and it’s Dub is great, you should watch everything that’s on netflix. 

The next case 346-347 Find The Buttock's Mark served as a bit of an epilogue to the arc in how it opens at least. 

361-362 Teitan High School’s Ghost Story also serves as a bit of an epilogue. 

2004’s late Winter-Early Spring had a lot of Kaitou Kid material. 

The 4th OVA in March was Conan, Kid and the Crystal Mother which adapts a chapter of the Magic Kaitou Manga but writes Conan into it as he wasn’t there originally. 

A TV Special to promote the next few examples titled Time Travel of the Silver Sky. It’s kind of a Kid focused Recap episode with a framing device starring Agasa. 

His fourth appearance in the TV Anime, but arguably second proper Kid episode, 356 Kaitou Kid’s Miraculous Midair Walk. 

And his second movie, Magician of the Silver Sky, which I rank as an A tier film. It was the first directed by Yasuishiro Yamamoto who would Direct all of them for the next Week of Years. 

There is also more epiloging of the Vermouth Arc in Kid’s 2005 appearance 394-396 Big Adventure in The Electric Mansion. 

Which is in turn followed up on in 398-399 The Strange Family’s Request. 

2005 had the 9th movie, Strategy Above The Depths which some consider the last good movie, I think most are still good but I would agree there was a decrease in average quality after this. 

Update May 3rd 2026: More of these Episodes are Dubbed and on Netflix now thanks to the FBI Selection added on May 1st (sometimes the Title has a different then expected English title). Be sure to check them out. I'm confident even more will be added when the selection's 2nd Cour drops. 

Video Games and Anime that turn 30 this year

I’ve kind of already talked about the importance of 1996 to Video Games when I argued it’s the start of the Silver Age of Gaming.  

But to sum it up the original Pokémon Games in Japan, the Launch of the N64, Super Mario RPG, DKC3 and Kirby Superstar as a trio of swan songs for the SNES and in the world of Japanese Bishoujo Games the birth of the Visual Novel with Shizuka and Kizuato from Leaf alongside Welcome to Pia Carrot and Kakyusei and to end of the year Otaku Culture’s Princess of Mars turned John Carter in YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World. 

Remember that Commercial for Super Mario RPG about the Elderly man rambling about the plot of the game to his Grandchildren? I was 10 for most of 96 and I consider myself possibly on the younger end of people Nostalgic for this game.  So we’re now halfway to the point of that commercial becoming real.

For Anime that turns 30 this year, due to what my focus has been lately Detective Conan is what I’ve been hearing about and talking about the most. Netflix has some of the earliest important episodes streaming both Dubbed and Subbed, the two part pilot at the start of the Black Organization collection and then the first five episodes of the Rivals Collection are episodes that aired in 96.  But there are still many important 96 episodes not there like the Moonlite Sonotata Murder Case, Kogoro’s Class Reunion Murder Case, and the Mountain Bandaged Man Murder Case. They can all be watched Subbed on Crunchyroll, and they do have English Dubs for those who know where to look. Episode 42 (or 43 of the international count) was the last to air in 96. 

It looks like that’s the only TV Anime to start in Winter 1996 I’ve even partially watched. Looking at what shows have their second or last cour during Winter of 96 could cement an argument for viewing Spring 95 as the start of the year that begins the Bronze Age of Anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gundam Wing and Wedding Peach. 

For Sailor Moon this year ends SuperS in March and then airs most of SailorStars. 

For OVAs we have Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team, the Sonic The Hedgehog OVAs which became localized as Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie, Fire Emblem which I don’t remember the details of right now, it stars Marth and I think is the first time he was voiced by who still his voices him in Smash, but that’s the Japanese VA in the English Dub he’s Spike Spencer.

I like Inma Youjo enough to break my usual resistance to mentioning Hentai in these kinds of posts.  Its second and 3rd episodes came out in 96 and the 2nd in January is possibly the one I like most,  I have a sneaking suspicion Maya’s character design from the first two episodes influenced Utena. 

In Spring we got Escaflowne, Kodocha and Slayers Next and the first Shamanic Princess OVA on a date that’s technically Summer already, the birthday of John The Baptist, I can’t find dates for its other episodes.  That exact same day is also the release date of the 2nd of the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVAs which is the wildest one with its early Internet plot.

For movies we have Tenchi Muyo In Love which was good and Lupin III Dead or Alive which is probably fun but I don’t remember it as well as other lupin movies I’ve seen, Lupin’s TV Movies were better during the 90s, which we see in August with Lupin III: The Legend of The Twilight Gemini which I consider a personal favorite. The film version of Clamp’s X/1999 came out this year, but I’ve only seen the TV Anime version. 

Summer’s OVAs include the Maze OVA which is another fun hidden Gem of 90s Isekai.  But I’ve seen no TV Anime that started in Summer of 96, just continuations of prior shows. 

Fall had the Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy TV Anime once localized as Magical Project S which I do highly recommend. Another anime from Fall that’s notable but I haven’t seen yet is Martian Successor Nadesico. And Those who Hunt Elves also aired out this season. 

In the OVA department the year ends with Galaxy Fraulein Yuna and Wedding Peach DX and 08th MS Team reaching its halfway point.

For Western Weebs, this year is I’m pretty sure when Sailor Moon first aired in America after the DiC Dub initially broadcast in Canada in late 95. I’m pretty sure catching early Sunday morning broadcasts of Sailor Moon in 96 was my very first exposure to any Japanese Animation. 

Decade Anniversary of 2016 Anime

2016 happens to be an important year in my personal history with Anime. Even though I’d had some interest in some Anime for 20 years previously, and at the end of the year still had only seen a fraction of the Anime I’ve seen now (maybe even specially a minority of what had existed up that point), it was during this year I feel I truly became an Otaku, became someone whose interest in Anime and related media took priority over all the older Nerdy interests I do still have. 

For Winter 2016. 

Grimgar of Ashes and Illusions is an Anime I didn’t finish but it’s notable to some as what a lost potential of what Isekai could have become if it’d been Darker or more Realistic and or just generally taken itself more seriously. 

Knosuba is the opposite yet also a show I never finished even the first season of as the ultimate Isekai parody.  This season also had the second cour of Gate which I’ve talked about before.

Erased is a show I’ve watched twice and I like it, yes even its ending. 

And it had the last season of Durarara!! Which was excellent. And also the last cour of Lupin III Part IV which was also good. 

Aokana is a show I’ve seen and consider pretty okay. Also the last part of Code Geass: Akito of the Exiled and the Selector Destructed Wixoss movie. 

Spring 2016 had Re:Zero, Netoge, season 3 of Sailor Moon Crystal, High School Fleet, Flying Witch and the second part of Concrete Revolutio an Anime I only very recently became a fan of. That's six very solid shows right there. It also had the 20th Detective Conan film Darkest Nightmare which was good and the movie version of Gundam Thunderbolt December Sky which was very good. And the third Gundam The Origin OVA, the fourth would come out in December. 

Summer 2016 had the second half of Re:Zero season 1 but also the first half of Tales of Zestria which is a great example of how the Fantasy Anime adapted from specific Video Games often feel the least Gamey. 

New Game! was great, Prisma Illya 3wei is as well. 

The separate Anime listed on the database Websites as different Danganronpa 3s should not be watched separately but in the episode order they are placed in on Crunchyroll.  In that form they are The Godfather Part II of Anime and in my opinion even better, a true masterpiece.

For movies Summer 2016 has two of the biggest of all, Your Name and A Silent Voice, both of which are great movies. It also has the Accel World movie which I enjoyed and Pokémon: Volcanion and The Mechanical Marvel which was okay. 

For Pokémon this year was the end of the X and Y Generation which I really like, probably the last Generation of Pokémon I really got into. That also means it’s the start of Sun and Moon which I’ve always found the art style of off putting.  But the Pokémon Generations ONAs were pretty good. 

Fall 2016 is a fascinating season, one of it’s biggest shows I’ve still never watched but conceptually do respect and want to give props to, Yuri On Ice. Another show from that season I know of but haven’t seen is Keijo. Of the six shows from this season I have watched to completion, all are shows I like.  I also recall that the second season of Sound Euphonium aired this season.

What’s special about this season is it’s my first time really following Seasonal Anime as they aired. Earlier in the year I had heard of both Re;Zero and Konosuba and maybe also Erased but didn’t follow them. I had watched Crystal season 3 on Hulu (which was Free with Ads back then) as it aired where I was also following the finishing of SailorStars being uploaded there, but I’ve always compartmentalized Sailor Moon from general seasonal Anime. 

Those six Fall 2016 shows are Izetta The Last Witch, Flip Flappers, ViVid Strike!, Lostorage Incited Wixoss, Occultic;Nine and Magical Girl Raising Project which is the only one I’ll qualify, as a defender of so called “Dark Magical Girl shows’ in general this isn’t one of the best of them but I like some of what it does.  The first two of those are the ones I actively followed at the time.

When talking about 2017's importance I have sometimes mistakenly referred to that Winter as my first time following seasonal Anime.  This is because of three things.  I didn't watch much of Fall 2016 at the time.  I kinda just happened to be following these currently airing shows not registering that this was an Anime Fandom practice I was doing for the first time. And 2017 was my first full Gregorian calendar year following Seasonal Anime. 

This year was the 20th Anniversary of Detective Conan’s Anime just as current year is the show’s 30th. Which is why this year had the Episode One OVA which was an okay way to get the gist of how it started with more modern Animation, but I’d more recommend just watching the early episodes which are currently on Netflix.  

For the show proper 2016 began with two 1 hour TV Original special episodes (804-805) written by the same guy who wrote movie 11 and was pretty fun. The Darkness of the Prefectural Police (810-812) was a fun episode that introduced a new character important to the Rum saga. The Shadow Chasing Amuro (813) was a tie in episode to the movie I mentioned before. The Actress Blogger’s locked room (814-815) is the next appearance of that new character. The suspects are a Passionate Couple (822-823) is a fun episode, one of the rare modern DC episodes I’ve watched 3 times already. Ramen so Good it’s to Die For 2 (827-828) is another fun episode, it has Sera in it. The Unfriendly Girls Band (836-837) is another fun episode I’ve seen 3 times, it’s a K-On reference and builds on some important lore and has one of the most memorable EDs which I suspect Yuki Yuna is A Hero fans will get a kick out of.  If I’ve seen more from 2016 I don’t remember for certain, but those are already more interesting episodes then I was expecting a single year from the Rum era to have when I started writing this. 

And the year ended with the Fate/Grand Order: First Order OVA which was fun. 

Going back to an observation I made at the start, even most Anime from 2016 I hadn’t seen at the time.  Most stuff from the first three seasons I didn’t even know of at the time, for the movies and some shows their Dubs didn’t exist yet, and even for that last season there’s still many I didn't watch till later. 

I got into to Anime during this year watching stuff that wasn't new at the time, or at least wasn't brand new, like Yuru Yuri, Lucky Star, Haruhi, Future Diary, Selector Infected Wixoss and Selector Spread Wixoss, Fate/Zero and Stay Night, and then Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and it’s sequel A’s on Thanksgiving, and possibly some more that I’ve forgotten exactly when I first watched them. And also revisiting some of the Anime I’d already been a fan of (including being the year I watched my favorite Anime Noir Subbed for the first and still only time). I didn’t realize at the time how for some of those Anime this year was their 10th anniversary and are thus turning 20 now. 

So perhaps it’s a little silly to celebrate the Anime that actually aired this year alongside it being the anniversary of my becoming an Otaku. But every time I find out something I watched more recently is from 2016 my brain goes “that makes sense” it’s like this was meant to be the year that got me to go full Weeb. 

There is none Anime stuff from 2016 I like in a similar way. I’m still a Suicide Squad apologist with mixed feelings on both BvS and Rouge One and all the American TV shows I was watching at that time. I may have even still been reading BlackCoatPress books. But Anime became my priority and it’s stuck.

Why am I making another when there aren't even any new episodes up yet?

Because Detective Conan is an easy show to get into where the continuity of where we currently are in the overall timeline only occasionally matters.

An argument can made that, besides maybe the first two episodes, watching the entire Rivals collection before the Black Organization collection could work. Those episodes give a better idea of what the Average Detective Conan episode is like even while also including notable events and important character moments.

But one simple change that could make the jumping around between collections a bit easier would be to watch Locked Room in The Sky Shinichi Kudo's First Case before the episode that introduces Haibara, Girl from The Black Organization. Since Haibara isn't in that episode, not even the framing device, and the bulk of it is a flashback. 

Indeed the Desperate Revival six parter is the only part of the Rivals Collection that feels like it really matters where you watch it relative to the Black Organization stuff, beside Hiabara being there it also directly references events from the Reunion with The Black Organization three parter. And for reasons that could be spoilers to explain it can be deemed important to watch before the Vermouth storyline, which begins proper with The Mysterious Passenger.

So maybe watch the first two episodes in Black Organization, then watch Rivals up till you finish Locked Room, then return to Black Organization collection for 5 episode (one of them being feature length), then finish the Rivals collection and then finish Black Organization. 

My hopes for what additional Detective Conan content gets dubbed this year.

First let's talk about movies.  I have quickly come to love the Nano cast the most of all English casts I've heard for this franchise.  I do like the BangZoom cast more then enough that I'd definitely rather they continue the Films then no more films getting Dubbed at all.  But if possible I would like for the Nano cast to also take over dubbing the films, but don't redo any that already have a Dub till all with none are covered, which are movies 7-18 and then catching up on the most recent until only the last 1 or 2 still aren't dubbed.

But I'd also be fine with this year focusing on Dubbing the show itself and not getting more movies besides besides 27 and maybe 28 (and maybe release movie 18 if it's true it's already recorded).

I am optimistic that what we'll get from the Netflix Dub project is a Cour of international count episodes every 2 months or 2 cour every 3 months, meaning 6-8 cours over the course of the next year.

Speaking of movie 27, it'd be good market synergy to have a selection focused entirely on Kaitou Kid appearances to correspond with that film's English Dub getting released.  It's be nice if it could cover all of them from before the Mystery Train Arc, save the Mystery Trains Arc (episode 699-704) to be the Finale of a future cour covering the Bourban Arc.  I've done the math and there is room for a 2 cour collection to cover all of them including Shinichi Kudo's Childhood Adventure and Kobayashi Sensei's Love which transitions into The Kirin's Horn.

I'd also like to see a collection continue where the Black Organization collection left off. One where the first cour includes the 2 2-parters that introduce Eisuke Hondou, Shadow of the Black Organization and the first 4 episodes of The Clash of Red and Black, then the second cour would be the rest of The Clash of Red and Black and The Karaoke Box Case which says goodbye to Eisuke (so far).  They could call it the Red vs Black Collection.

I'd like to have a Cour that is 646-657 which happens to be 13 consecutive international count episodes that among other things introduce Sera Masumi.  It'd arguably have to be preceded by a Cour that incudes the Homes Revelation saga and maybe one with the earliest appearances of Subaru Okiya and Scar Akai. [Update: 652-655 are not as relevant to the Sera Masumi or Bourbon storylines as I initially assumed.]

The Holmes Revelation case along with episodes 398-400 could be part of another ShinRan romance focused cour.  

I'd also really like one that fills in the gaps that were skipped over during the Vermouth saga.  Principally Contact with The Black Organization 309-311 and Four Porsches 338-339 and then Hidden Bathroom Secret 340-341. Those could be covered by a Haibara centered Collection which could also include Hooligan's Labyrinth 279-280. And then episodes focused on the FBI characters like The Battle Game Trap 226-227, then 277-278 and The Man from Chicago 258-259, On The Trail of The Silent Witness 307-308 and 343-344 The Connivence Story Trap.

And then if there is time for more after covering all that, maybe drop a cour near Halloween focused on episodes that could work as Halloween episodes, a lot of the ones where the case is solved using Sonoko's voice would happen to fit into that.

This is the year for 20th Anniversaries of 2006 Anime.

Starting with January 9th being the 20th anniversary of Detective Conan’s 425th episode Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization reaches out.  An episode I’ve discussed on this blog already and is among those you can watch Dubbed on Netflix and Crunchyroll.  January 8th 2026 is also the 30th year of the Detective Conan anime premiering, which the community at large has been more focused on talking about, Anime with 30th anniversaries I may save for a separate post, though I'm not sure 96 has enough to talk about. 

I happened to spend some time in late 2025 on social media asserting a view that 2006 is the Best Year of Anime, not even thinking about the fact that those shows are getting their Two Decade anniversaries soon.  2006 is not a year I consider either the start or end of an era, it’s more like it’s the peak of what I call the Bronze Age of Anime.

Alright technically two Anime episodes I consider of note aired before January 9th.  January 6th was the last episode of Shuffle.  And the pilot of Studio Deen’s Fate/Stay Night anime on the 7th.  But my defense of Deen/Stay Night mainly begins with episode 3 where you should start after watching UBW’s episode 0 and 1 to get the proper beginning of the VN.

Nerima Daikon Brother is a hilarious spiritual sequel to Excel Saga. Kashimashi: Girl Meets World could be the best stealth Trans Feminine Anime. Good Anime with second cours airing in Winter include, Karin, Black Cat, Mai-Otome and Blood+ which was actually still be airing for most of 2006. 

Returning to Detective Conan in February Eisuke Hondou made his Anime Debut in 429-430 Two People Who Can’ Return. March had the 6th annual OVA Follow The Vanished Diamond! Conan & Heiji vs Kid! which was fun. 

For Spring Simoun is an Anime I still haven’t seen yet but intend to, it’s an important example of Anime exploring Gender.  Another spring show I haven’t seen that I know is important is Gintama. I don't have much interest in that one. 

Shows I have seen from Spring are where we really start getting to how 2006 isn’t just a good year but could be the best.  

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, which I shouldn't need to explain the logic of considering one of the most important Anime of all time. 

Strawberry Panic which I consider the Magnum Opus of Classic Class S style Yuri Anime.

The second season of School Rumble, which surpassed the first season, is one of the best really wild Comedy Anime, an important precursor to more modern shows like Kaguya Sama: Love Is War and DFrag. 

Nana is the best Shoujo Melodrama of all time.

Higurashi When They Cry which is still the best Horror Anime of all time.

I’ve only seen a few episodes of .hack//roots, not sure what to think of it yet. 

Though the year isn’t looking great so far in the Film department, with nothing I’ve seen from Winter and Spring having one of my personal lowest ranked Detective Conan films.

Summer had The Familiar of Zero which via a website that started as a fansite for it can be considered the Grandmother of both modern Isekai and modern Magic Academy Anime.

Le Chevalier D’Eon which is one of the year’s top forgotten Gems, a highly recommended Anime for all Francophiles. 

And Summer finally has some good movies with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the 9th Pokémon film, Pokémon Ranger and The Temple of The Sea. 

And in late July Eisuke Hondou made his second appearance in 446-47 The Sealed Western-Style Window.

Fall is what really seals the deal.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl began on September 28th, which I consider the best era of the Pokémon TV Anime.

Death Note is another show that is inarguably one of the most popular and influential of all time.

Kyoto Animation’s Kanon I personally consider the best Anime based on a Dating Sims Style Visual Novel, and it's definitely an important precursor to more well know KyoAni Key adaptations that came later.

Code Geass first season which is my favorite Mecha Anime and I at one time considered it my second favorite Anime over all.  Regardless of my personal opinion, it's as widely popular among Anime fans as Death Note, if only a little less mainstream, that show’s natural rival and counterpart in a lot of ways.

Strain: Strategic Armoured Infantry is another great hidden gem, think of it as unofficially a Gundam where Sayla Mass is the main character. 

The Mai-Otome Zwei OVAs I also enjoyed. 

So a lot of important Anime turn 20 this year, and some neat bonuses as well. 

A notable non PreCure Mahou Shoujo is all 2006 lacks among what I’m already aware of. 

And one more thing: new Detective Conan episodes on Netflix

The Detectives Gathered Together is an episode that will turn 25 years old on the same day the Pilot episode turns 30, January 8th.  The Mysterious Passenger is also from 2001.

I have to say the Rivals of The Great Detective Collection feels very misnamed.  Only some episodes involve any character who could be called a Rival to Conan, but there are few that don't feel important to the ShinRan Romance storyline. It's almost like they wanted to hide that Romance was the real focus.

This is perhaps the best this Dub has seen of Sonoko so far, still none of the episode where the case is solved using her voice, but it captures the point of her character better then the small roles she had in Kid's Debut or the Vermouth Arc's finale.

The Case from the last two episodes of The Desperate Revival is a Columbo episode though I forgot to note it as such when making my personal list of Columbo episodes, Kudo even has a "one more thing" moment, though probably for lipflap reasons the Dub didn't translate it using that exact phrase.

It's amusing how in less then two months a number of Magic Kaito supporting character went from having no English VAs to having 2 each.

The detective wearing Green in Detectives Gathered I'm pretty sure has the same VA as "Santos" from the Funimation Dubs of the first 6 movies.  A voice actor who I remember uniquely because of the Audio Commentary for the final episode of Robotics;Notes, I think it was the last episode I'm thinking of.

Looking Forward to Anime in 2026

The first day of the year a new batch of Dubbed Detective Conan episodes are dropping on Netflix, I may be in the process of watching those already when I post this, or about to start them. And then we’ll get the Episode Zero special on Saturday with the first movie The Time-Bombed Skyscraper going up on YouTube that night as the climax of Cinema Saturdays.  The first new Manga case we get in 2025 should be a new Kaito Kid appearance, but we can sometimes go over a month with only Anime Original episodes. 

The Simuldubs for Watari-Kun and Spy x Family season 3 should be finished sometime in January. 

For the Winter season the only show I know for certain I’ll be making an attempt to watch as it airs (or as it’s Dub airs) is Fate/Strange Fake. I’ve been hyped for it for over two years now.  I’ve been holding off on doing any Fate/ rewatching so that I can do that while this airs like I did watching Gundam stuff while GQuuuuuuX aired. So I intend to make it a Fate/Full winter. And maybe I'll watch some other Narita shows too.

Frieren is a show I’ve already concluded I prefer binging by arc, and according to some rumors it sounds like the new season may have only one arc, so I’ll likely wait. 

Spring is going to have 4th seasons for three shows Re:Zero, SlimeReincarnation and Classroom of the Elite. Each of these are ones I also know I tend to prefer Binged, especially with Slime’s penchant for doing multiple Council of Elronds. But I feel less dogmatic about it then I do for Frieren. 

Liar Game looks like it could have the potential to remind me of why I loved Liar Liar back in Summer 2023. 

Summer will have a new season for Magical Luimierre. I liked season 1 but I’m not sure I liked it enough for the show to maintain my interest. 

The upcoming Detective Conan movie will be released in Japan in April but I expect that as usual we who need English Subs probably won’t be able to see it till between Thanksgiving and Christmas. 

There is a lot of stuff that may or may not drop this year, it’s uncertain.  The new Raildex shows being Darkside Item and season 4 of Railgun, the new Nanoha project, new Code Geass project, new seasons for Mushoku Tensai, Boochie The Rock, Alya speaks Russian. Maybe new seasons for Skeleton Knight and Deadliest Assassin and MobuSeka, and for non sequels I’m interested in Girl Crush and Ruri Dragon. 

It almost feels like "Looking Forward" is a misleading title when I’m mentioning so few truly completely new shows.  But that’s the thing, the New shows I wind up liking are not usually what I was hyped for going in but something which catches my attention in the moment, or even after it’s done airing. That’s the point of being a New show, they’re the pleasant surprises while the sequels and spin offs to shows I already like are what I rely on. 

Update January 6th: I forgot to mention the Gundam Hathaway sequel, that's something I've been excited for. 

There is also the matter of Dubs for things that have been out in Japan, Girls Und Panzer Das Finale 4 and Lupin The IIIrd Immortal Bloodlines is confirmed to be getting a Dub already, I'm hoping Zenigata and the Two Lupins will as well.

Update January 18th: I had more or less given up on trying to follow anymore PreCure shows, I respect the franchise immensely but a stretched out episodic show to nail thing just right to engage me.  But then I learned the new 2026 PreCure starting in February will be in part a Detective Show with a Detective Conan reference in the trailer, and so I figure I should give it a show.

Q is Chekhov’s Gunman

I’ve currently only seen three James Bond films in their entirety, the first two Daniel Craig movies and most recently earlier this year The Man With The Golden Gun.  But I’ve seen clips of other movies before and I watched a bunch of Bond relevant Video Essays on YouTube this year because they simply were what was trending a few times.

Bond has been a very influential franchise,  so I can see Bond’s fingerprints on plenty of other media I’ve consumed.  Lupin III has been called the James Bond of Japan, a few of the 60s and 70s Godzilla films are referred to as being James Bond influenced.  There are direct James Bond references in the Anime Moriarty The Patriot. 

What’s interesting though is how one of the key signs that something is really leaning into the Bond influence structurally is if there is a Q analogue. When Batman Begins was being hyped up Nolan was very open about the James Bond influence, and a key factor always pointed out was Lucius Fox as played by Morgan Freeman being Bruce’s Q.  Nolan's love of drawing on Bond continued with Inception and Tenet which also both have their Q analogues. 

And a thing I’m sure I’m not the first to notice about Q is how his role is essentially to provide Chekhov’s Guns.  Professor Agasa has been referred to as Detective Conan’s Q, and it's in several of the movies that it's really on the nose, just like Q he introduces some new invention early on which then plays a key role in the climax. 

The wording of Chekhov’s Gun is that because something is seen early on it should be used.  But no sane person is really going around criticizing every time some innocuous detail from act one doesn’t come up later. No it’s considered good writing advice for the opposite angle, anything that plays an important role in the resolution should be set up earlier, that’s how you avoid a Deus Ex Machina accusation. 

So Bond style movies without a designated Q character still have a scene or two that like Q serve the purpose of introducing something in the protagonist's arsenal that will be important later. Maybe the protagonist themselves invented whatever gadgets they’re going to use, like many non Nolan versions of Batman. 

And this is why I struggle at being an actually interesting blogger. I make lots of observations like this I want to share, but they don’t always lead me to any profound revelation or theory.  Rather than continuing this Chekhov’s Gun train of thought I kind of want to share other random Bond related thoughts I’ve had this year. 

Ya know the Obi-Wan Kenobi parts of Attack of The Clones could be compared to a Bond movie just as much as they can to Film Noir Detective films. Ewen McGregor has a similarly dry sense of humor to Roger Moore and Christopher Lee is the villain.

I watched a Book YouTube video that separated all the Bond Novels both by which they felt were the good ones and which ones’ namesake films are a reasonably faithful adaptation of at least the same basic sequence of events. And the only novel that was both good and doesn’t have a close enough adaptation is Moonraker, which is interesting for in the Book having a villain who is a surviving Nazi War Criminal, not the most original idea for a Pulp Villain but they annoyingly keep staying relevant. 

When it comes to the various pitches Bond fans keep saying they want for the next movie, I kind of hope the Period Piece idea is the one Amazon doesn’t do.  Because when the Bond Novels (except maybe Thunderball) enter the Public Domain pretty much everywhere but the United States in a decade, period piece films that directly adapt those novels distinctly unlike how the Movies have typically been are exactly what people independent of Amazon will most easily be able to make without Amazon shutting it down.  

So I say an old fashioned Black and White mid 50s set Moonraker adaptation is exactly what some independent filmmakers should right now begin preparing to make. In fact you can already do it in Canada. Maybe give it a different name since Pop Culture now associates that name with something distinctly NOT in the book. 

My other advice for people planning to make their own PD James Bond projects in a decade is if you want to avoid Spectre because of the question mark that might still hang over Thunderball, just use Paul Feval’s Les Habits Noirs translated The Blackcoats as your international criminal secret society. Their English branch is sometimes called The Gentleman of The Night and it's leader The Lord of The Night is sometimes plotting to liberate Ireland from British rule which I mention because another Bond video I saw talked about the lack of Ireland in the Bond movies.

In some small ways certain writers have always gotten away with treating Bond like he’s quasi PD.  Like incorporating the Mycroft Holmes was the original M fan theory.  Is there any fictional character from the same era whose name happens to begin with the letter Q who was also a scientist/inventor?

 With it being a new themed collection, it becomes necessary to start explaining to new comers what the chorological order of episodes is.  

So far it's pretty simple, the first two episodes of the show start the Black Organization collection, then watch all 11 currently in the allies and rivals collection then return to the Black Organization collection.

Part of me is a little disappointed this drop was all episodes already part of the Funimation Dub.  yeah that Dub isn't legally streaming right now but I have them DVD.  It is interesting to compare though.  Now that we have all these very early episodes part of the new Dub the moonlight Sonata Murder Case being missing stick out, it may not be important to understanding any recurring guest start but it's arguably the most important to Conan's character development, and it will be called back to in the next Heiji case.

The second Cour of this selection will almost certainly start out still in the firs 123 as well.  The first 2 hour episode is bound to be included since it's the second Ran suspecting Conan episode and second featuring his parents and introduces he Gunam Inspector.  And then there are some more Heiji episodes including the introduction of Kazuha.

Once it does leave the first 123 I wonder if they'll include the case that immediately followers Haibara's introduction, it's important to cementing her as a main cast member and is the first appearance of Officer Sato though she doesn't do a lot in it.

Update: They went the Boston rather then Southern option for the Kansei accent, the first time I've seen that in awhile.

Episodes 5 and 10 are the ones I'm most surprised to see included, I didn't think they'd be in any collection.  Episode 10 is now an episode I've seen with 3 different English casts since for random reasons it's the only episode I've seen of the original Singapore Dub.

Shonen and Battle Shonen

Shonen is a Manga Demographic term that sometimes gets mistaken for a Genre term in the west.  What people typically mean when they mistakenly use Shonen as a genre term is Battle Shonen.  But even what that means can be itself a bit arguable and I suspect another case where that’s not what they call these kinds of Manga in Japan.

I tend to refer to Battle Shonen as a genre I’m not very into with Dragonball Z being the only Battle Shonen Anime I’ve watched to any significant degree.  The shows I’m intending to tell people I haven’t watched when I say that are Yu Yu Hakushu, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, One Punch Man, My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Demon Slayer and JJK.  Interestingly I know that at least one of those isn’t even technically Shonen but Seinen. 

Most of the Shonen Manga based Anime I’ve completed are shows I didn’t even originally think were Shonen but rather Seinen.  Death Note and Future Diary are in particular the shows that forced me to rethink what I assumed Shonen meant when I learned their Manga were officially Shonen.  I was associating the term Shonen exclusively with kids shows, that’s not why I’m not into Battle Shonen, I absolutely love watching some kids' shows like Classic Mahou Shoujo and Pokémon. If there is a show other than DBZ I’ve watched that can be considered a Battle Shonen it’s probably one of these “I can’t believe it’s not Seinen” shows. 

And there are a few Shonen with enough female perspective and Melodrama to make some at first think they're Shoujo like Karin aka Chibi Vampire and Shattered Angels.

Pokémon not being considered Battle Shonen isn’t because of the Shonen part, it may not be a Manga original franchise but it has Manga and they are Shonen and there is no dispute the target age demographics of the Pokémon Games and Anime originally was principally Shonen.  It’s not a Battle Shonen because even though Battles are a part of Pokémon's appeal it’s not the structural foundation the same way it is in a Battle Shonen. 

The other important Shonen I’m into is Detective Conan and the kinda same universe series Magic Kaito. In order to call them Battle Shonen you’d have to get pretty abstract about what it means to battle someone. 

Maybe some of you think Detective Conan should be part of the could pass for Seinen category, and I’m not saying it can’t pass for Seinen. But I do not see it as difficult to pass for a kids show.  For all the desire some have to deny that it’s a kids show it really doesn't do much worse with it's murder and violence than Batman The Animated Series did. 

There is also Full Metal Alchemist.  If there is something I don't consider a Battle Shonen that others do, it's probably that franchise.

I'm going to elaborate on some of my thoughts on the early Detective Conan movies.

The first movie, The Time Bombed Sky Scraper is a perfect Cinematic introduction for Conan because of two things.  It has a cold open depicting the end of the average Conan episode is like.  And it's about Shinichi Kudo more then any other film.

Shinichi Kudo is actually the same person as Conan Edogawa and is thus the main protagonist of all these films. But they are treated as separate characters in the credits for convenience in how to credit the Voice Ace actors involved.  But also when you look at these events from the perspective of the people who don't know everything the audience does, Shinichi seems more involved in some cases then others.

This movie features a flashback to a Shinichi case from before he was shrunken, a villain who is in part targeting Shinichi specifically, and the main villain is exposed in the end using Shinichi's voice, something we only see a few other times in the movies and each of those there is still more focus on other guest characters. 

The second movie The Fourteenth Target is the one currently on the TMS YouTube Channel and will be till the 13th.   It's one of my least favorite, it's especially underwhelming compared to the one before the three following it. 

My main issue is that I know in real life the shoot the hostage tactic is in fact not considered a good idea.  But other aspects of the plot do feel uniquely contrived.  

The third film The Last Wizard of The Century I have called the best of them all a number of times. I've considered walking that back slightly, it's definitely a 10/10 on the same level as the two movies following it. 

As someone who's read the classic Arsene Lupin Novels, this feels more like one of those then any Lupin III Anime does.

I also really love how it ends, by which I mean what leads into the credits not the post credits stinger. The way it weaves the remaining threads of the narrative together in a fairly intimate moment with beautiful music scoring it.  It's perhaps one of my favorite endings of any film.

The fourth movie Captured In Her Eyes is to start with one of the films I like to recommend as showing how you make something like a Film Noir without needing to be a period piece or use some fantastical excuse to pretend to be one. 

Now some may feel annoyed at the Amnesia plot rendering Ran not herself for much of the film.  But the pay off at the end is that we get to see her do something important to her character the prior films never got to include.

The fifth film Countdown to Heaven is the third film featuring Haibara Ai but the first that's really about her to any degree and as such makes a good introduction to her character.  But also if you want to slip it chronologically into your watch of the Black Organization collection on Netflix and Crunchyroll it happens between the Reunion with The Black Organization three parter and The Mysterious Passenger. 

So four of the first five films are still ones I consider the highest level of Detective Conan films.  But there are very few I dislike to any degree, they are pretty much all Fun movies.  

The next level would be movies 7-9 and 11, those would be the A Tier if I made a Tier ranking. 

Why Episode 425 Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out is an important Detective Conan Episode.

I'm about to talk about this episode in the Context of my relationship with it as someone who didn't watch all the DC episodes I've seen in order, so I'll be spoiling not just the episode at hand but episodes as recent as 2023.

I had been watching through all the Black Organization relevant episodes is roughly chronological order up to the end of the Vermouth arc, but then really started jumping around more randomly. So for example I'd seen all of The Clash of Red and Black before watching this episode that started the Kir saga.  

So I found it interesting how Conan is kind of technically committing Treason in how he's working with these FBI agents operating in Japan without permission, removing evidence from Crime scenes and lying to cover for them to the Japanese police officers he works with more regularly and knows more personally. I found it curious how the Japanese audience was so cool with all that. 

Then I finally watched this episode, a mistake Conan makes early in the episodes puts his Family in danger and at the end the FBI and Akai particularly essentially saves them by taking the Heat for Conan's tracking device. 

And so Conan in indebted to them, and that a very Japanese sense of Honor can explain his loyalty to them. 

So I am glad this Episode is Dubbed now, I just also wish more of the prior episodes with these FBI character were as well to set it up. But I did also recently argue against Continuity Lock Out. 

More Detective Conan episodes are on Netflix now.

The new Dub is still great, awesome cast and good scripting, and each episode is a good one including two of my favorite of the entire series. I do want everyone to keep watching them so they'll make more. 

However I can no longer stay silent about how frustrated I am with how this is being handled.

I would be less annoyed by how many important episodes are being skipped if these weren't the only ones we can legally watch even just Subbed between 123 and 754.  If TMS would just make all of it available Subbed somewhere then I could direct people to the context they're missing. 

I was fully prepared for the amount of content we'd get today to be no more then what we got in terms of runtime.  However when they said this would end the Black organization collection I assumed it was gonna end with episode 345 Head to Head Match with The Black Organization: A Duel Mystery on a Full Moon Night the finale of the Vermouth arc.  

Episode 425 Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out is a very good and very important episode but one I was willing to wait for since it's the start of an era of the show not an ending.  

For today's drop I would gladly have traded it for Contact with The Black Organization 309-311 and Four Porsches 338-339.  And of the episodes between Mysterious Passenger and 345 I would also for a collection branded as being about Conan VS the Black Organization consider them more directly relevant then The New York Murder Case, that case's relevance to the BO storyline is largely in hindsight, Contact is the episode that really first starts revealing what the BO is actually doing. And Four Porsches is most of the set up that 345 pays off. 

And if we could have had more episodes I'd next have prioritized Hidden Bathroom Secret 340-341 and 343-344 The Connivence Story Trap.  

The New York Murder Case I would maybe have saved for a Collection focused on key episodes of the ShinRan Romance storyline in which I'd include every episode where Ran suspects the truth at least up to The Desperate Revival 188-193, maybe episode 10, Ski Lodge Murder Case 84-85,The Memories of First Love Murder Case 100-101, The Locked Room in the Sky: Shinichi's First Case 162 (which is a double length episode), The Secret Rushed Omission 271-271 and again 343-344.  

If that is the theme of the next collection we get which I think it should be, but again being given only 12-13 episodes, I would skip those already covered by the first 123 and focus on the episodes the West hasn't officially gotten yet. 

Another theme the next collection could have is an FBI characters focus, Cinema Saturdays is doing the two most FBI centric movies in a row, and it would fill in some gaps. It could start with The Battle Game Trap 226-227, then 277-278, 343-344 and Four Porsches could also fit here, The Man from Chicago 258-259.  And then Shadow of The Black Organization.  Those being the options for just the first Cour of such a collection, the second cour would have to be the full Clash of Red and Black, not a single episode skipped.

Update August 26th 2025: Contact With The Black Organization has moments that could justify making it part of either a ShinRan or FBI themed selection, it'd be hard to argue that's the main point of the episodes, but I also feel it's hard to argue the Black Organization is the main point of the New York Murder Case. 

I've also recalled that a few things my memory associated with Contact actually happened in the prior two parter 307-308 On The Trial of The Silent Witness.  But none of the most essential stuff.

I recommend doing a binge of the episodes on Netflix where you watch this movie between the Reunion three prater and Mysterious Passenger since that's when it originally came out.

And rewatch the new Dub on Netflix and/or Crunchyroll as often as you can.

Detective Conan Subbed

For the past few years the majority of the time I've spent watching Anime Subbed has been Detective Conan.  That's a franchise I got into via a decent chunk being Dubbed, and what is Dubbed I've mostly still only watched Dubbed unless the Dub didn't exist yet when I first watched it.  The exceptions to that being just a handful of early FUNimation episodes.

Of the theatrically released movies that only ones I haven't watched Subbed are the ones that were already Dubbed when I first got into Detective Conan in early 2022, plus the most recent one I haven't seen at all yet.  Those being the first 6 movies and movies 19-23.

This will soon changed as it's now confirmed TMS is putting Countdown to Heaven the fifth movies on YouTube Subbed. I intend to watch it each movies when it's on YouTube, I may not always be able to make the Saturday Evening premier, but some time in the following Week I with it on YouTube. So it looks like that means all of the first 6 movies I'll be watching Subbed finally.

Watching something Subbed is easier when I've already seen it, I already know the gist at least of what is going to be said.  4 of the first 6 movies I've watched 4 times each now, the other two twice each all the way through.  One of this four is Countdown to Heaven.

I honestly am kind of excited, watching movies I already love a great dela in a new way.  I'm pretty sure the DVDs I own also have Subs, but even if I did watch those they would probably be different from hat TMS is about to put on YouTube.

I am of course not opposed to the films being Redubbed with the new Cast on Netflix, though I would prioritize trying to make Dubs for ones not Dubbed yet.
