Gyaru are not Normies

[Update August 8th 2025: I really regret much of this post, the title and thus the main point is still correct, more so even, but there is a lot I clearly didn't get about Gyaru culture and it's history, and still don't.]

I see people like Anime Vlogger OtakuSpirit in his Alya speaking Russian videos make the mistake of calling a Gyaru character a Normie a lot so I felt like talking about it.

American watchers of Anime confuse Gyaru for Normies sometimes because what Gyaru are doing is influenced by what is or at least once was Mainstream Normie White Girl culture in the United States.  But in Japan that’s not normal, they are a subculture under constant pressure from mainstream Japanese culture to conform just like typical Otaku and Fujoshi.

Sometimes I think viewers fail to notice a character being a Gyaru when they are the main character, like in Citrus.  In what got animated the term is never actually used, at least not that I can recall, so it’s easy for someone not fully paying attention to think Yuzu is Blond for the same reason Sailor Moon is.  Citrus also catches a lot of western viewers off guard because Anime usually doesn’t fully acknowledge how strict the Japanese Public School system actually is, Yuzu getting crap from the authorities for not looking like everyone else actually makes the show more realistic than most Anime, but some casual critics of the show don’t want to think about that so pretend it’s just being cartoonishly dystopic.  Yuzu being a Gyaru is what makes her a rebel against Normie society.

I could also mention the studio Nur Hentai called Soshite Watashi wa Sensei ni…  The main character has recently become a Gyaru but her “best friend” and Teacher don’t like that so they are trying to make her stop being a Gyaru by…. Raping her repeatedly.... because Hentai logic.  4 episodes in and they haven’t succeeded yet, but Nur/PoRo isn’t known for having happy endings.

So as I alluded to before Gyaru fashion is in part inspired by parts of American culture, so you could say they are a specific type of Ameriboo, that they are Otaku of sorts but instead of Anime it’s based on movies and shows like Clueless and Mean Girls and Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars.  PLL is still my favorite American TV show in spite of my issues with the last 3 seasons, so seeing an Anime where a character is explicitly a PLL fan would really make me Geek out, someone please make it happen.

And all that is why Otaku Media depicting Gyaru do often express solidarity with them.  We saw this in the brief Gyaru appearance in the Nokotan Anime last year.  I’m currently watching the Dub for Loner Life In Another World as it comes out on HIDIVE, it’s depiction of its Gyaru clique seemed unflattering at first but they quickly seem to be getting better.

A good number of Hentai Doujins are about a male Otaku and a Gyaru having sex.  And yeah you could dismiss that as a pretty typical and generic self serving fantasy, but those Doujins are among the most Wholesome.  If you want Doujins where Girls can be consensually and enthusiastically sexually active without at all being shamed for it, your best bet are Gyaru Doujins.

Update June 3rd 2025: I'm starting to think I maybe should have watched Super Gals before trying to write a thesis statement about the role of Gyaru in Anime.

It vindicates the main thesis of this post, they are a subculture outside the mainstream as much as Otaku are.

My speculation about what kinds of American Media they are into possibly still holds up, but a lot of that Vibe could simply come from how the Dub chose to translate things.

The main thing is the Tanned Gyaru are very rare in Anime from the last Decade, but they have a notable presence here.  And I'm still unsure whether or not they are a distinct thing from the Gongoro Girls. The Trio of Tanned Gyaru in Super Gals remind me of the similar trio in Durarara!!.  Super Gals came first, it's Anime ended two years before the first Durarara!! LN came out.

I'm told the female lead in Dandadan is also a Gyaru of sorts, but I wasn't able to get into that show.

Anime 2005 Twenty Years later.

I’m not going to go as in depth as my equivalent 2004 post last year.

A lot of Anime in 2005 were continuations of 2004 shows, or sequels to 2004 shows, or spiritual follow ups in some fashion.  From getting more Pretty Cure and Nanoha to Mai Otome.

But it was also a year where new trends were started and new groundwork laid.  Air and Shuffle ushered in a Golden Era of Visual Novel adaptations. And in the Hentai world the start of PoRo as a studio and NTR as a genre with True Blue.

Blood+ and Karin are both neat Vampire shows to remember when October rolls around.

In the world of what was getting Localized in the West, I don’t have any specifics on me right now but I suspect most stuff from 2000-2002 that got Localized at all had the localization started at least by the end of 2005.

In the world of source material that got Animated later we had School Days, the second Durarara!! LN, and more of both Index and Higurashi.

For Detective Conan, nothing really big happened in the TV Anime main plot wise, I don’t know how many 2005 episodes I have seen but 394-396 was that year’s Kaito Kid appearance.  It’s possible the big Anime events of 2006 happened in the Manga in 2005 including episode 425 but I'm unsure. That year's movie was the 9th which some consider the last good one. I consider it pretty good.

Characters I interpret as Ace

This is not a complete list of every character in works I’m into that can be interpreted as Asexual and/or Aromantic.  They are characters I have a particular interest in interpreting this way, and largely came to this interpretation on my own before seeing any evidence that anyone else had also interpreted them as Ace.

I’m not Ace myself and so none of this is driven by a desire to see myself in these characters and in fact some of what I say may unwittingly reflect my own lack of understanding of Aceness.

Being Ace is a nuanced identity, besides the Sexual/Romantic distinction many make, there are some who wind up in sexual or romantic relationships in spite of identifying as Ace.  So some of these may be characters who the Canon gives a partner eventually but that doesn't invalidate my reading.  Some may even be characters who I myself also Ship with another character, but Shipping to me is not inherently Sexual or even always Romantic, it’s ultimately about liking the chemistry between two characters and wanting to see more of them together.

So I’m not even going to clarify whether I think a given character is Asexual or Aromantic or both as I’m not even sure I understand the line between them.

Cassandra Cain/Batgirl:  Since Batman is my oldest Fandom I figured I should start with the Bat Family member on that list. My direct experience with this character is limited, mostly Comics after she was no longer Mute but before Infinite Crisis, and even within that time frame is by no means complete.  But she does show a lack of interest in Romance.

She is the main reason for one of my above clarifications since I’m also a StephCass shipper, but how I view Steph’s orientation isn't solely defined by this Ship either.

Terra Branford: A good deal of her early game dialogue is about being unaffected by the flirting of the charming male character and feelings like she lacks something because of it.  She’s from Final Fantasy VI originally released in the US on the SNES as Final Fantasy III.

Paul of Tarsus: Is not a Fictional Character but I wanted to cover him here anyway. Much of my efforts to debunk Puritan and Ascetic readings of the New Testament involves stressing how in 1 Corinthians 7 Paul expresses hesitance to even talk on this subject and clearly says he’s NOT speaking with the Apostolic Authority he is on other issues. The fact is he clearly has a lack of ability to even relate to the desires that most people have.

Rei Hino/Sailor Mars in the Manga/Crystal:  Rei in the Manga canon is quite adamant about her lack of interest in men.  And as someone more sympathetic to the Manga fans complaints about the 90s Anime then most it still bugs me when they default to framing how Rei was changed as Straight Washing a Lesbian.   Rei’s wording it as not interested in “Men” does not mean she is interested in women, we live in a Heteronormative society where often the default way to express a lack of interest in Romance is to say you're uninterested in the other Sex.

Anri Sonohara: There is a lot made in Durarara!! about her inability to Love in a traditionally romantic sense.  Made all the more awkward by her being bonded with a sentient magical Yandere Katana.

Akito Yamada: It’s particularly awkward when you are coming to an Ace reading of a Romantic Lead in a Romantic Anime, and one example of that happening to me is with the title character of My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at Lv999.  This character very heavily comes off as Asexual and the knowledge that the genre setup sees that as an issue he needs to overcome is frustrating.

Yuu Koito: Bloom Into You is one of the most beloved Yuri Anime of the last decade, yet the Asexual vibes of its protagonist are just as thick.  Yuu isn’t the only possible Ace character in this show however. Seji Maki is definitely Ace, and there is the scene where he distinguishes his lack of interest in Romance from Yuu’s, but I don’t really think that means only one of them can qualify as Ace.

Ai Amatsu: Injuu Seisen is a Hentai series, so this might be the most baffling of all, how can I argue a Hentai character is Asexual?  Well the story involves evil Lust Demons as you might expect, and Ai seems almost completely immune to their lust inducing powers.  Now you might think that’s simply because of her own super power as one of the Twin Heroines of this series.  But her sister Mai who has the same magical gifts is absolutely NOT so immune, she is very very horny actually.

PureMail OVAs

PureMail is a 2 episode Hentail OVA from 2001 that is an adaptation of a 2000 Bishoujo Game/Visual Novel made by Overflow the same studio that made School Days and its “sequels”.

It is also in the same universe, the character named Miki Sawagana is the older sister of Taisuke Sawagana.  That’s the familial connection that is made obvious by surname, but I'll get to the matter of Overflow Universe world building and it's associated family tree later.

First, what do I think of this OVA as a stand alone work of art?

The thing about Erotic Art that wants to be more than just Porn is that I want it to be more than just a Good Story with good fappable Sex Scenes, they need to inform each other, to be firmly integrated.  There are lots of mainstream movies where it’s part of the Plot that sex happens, but it doesn’t need to happen fully on screen.  In Erotic Art it has to be more than just that Sex happens but the specifics of the Sex have to matter, some of the character development has to be tied to how they do or do not enjoy it.

And it’s that test which PureMail fails.  I find the story and characters very interesting and I found at least some of the H scenes Fappable.  But those H Scenes also feel like they’re interrupting the story rather than enhancing it.  There are times when the conversation happening after the sex directly picks up where they left off before, but because it’s separated by 5 minutes of mindless humping I lost the train of the conversation.

I’ve watched two versions of PureMail.  I watched its English Dub unedited and uncensored on a Hentail website I won’t name here. And I watched an English Subbed version on YouTube that has the explicit parts edited out.  And it demonstrates my above criticism that the edited version actually felt like it had better pacing.  It removed vestigial organs while in ideal erotic art removing the sex scenes would be removing the heart and soul.

Unfortunately that edited version is no longer on YouTube, I neglected to download it and I don’t remember the name of the Channel, so it looks like it's probably now Lost Media that only I care about.

School Days and some of its “sequels” are known for not being presented how most Visual Novels usually are but being basically interactive Anime.  PureMail as far as I can tell wasn’t like that, it was a more normal Visual Novel.  I bring that subject up here because it means the actual source material for the Days series can be compared to PureMail’s adaptation at being an Erotic Anime.  Now I currently have not seen all the Erotic content that School Days HQ and Shiny Days have to offer, but I’ve seen some that definitely do succeed where the PureMail OVAs failed.  Even if it would be hard to argue everything is specifically absolutely necessary; they still convey things about the characters which those so easy to edit out PureMail scenes did not.

As the title of PureMail implies it involves some characters communicating via Email, so it’s perhaps one of the earliest Hentai to feature the Internet as a plot point.

One thing that I feel vindicates my vocal interpretation that Otome raped Makoto in episode 9 of the School Days Anime is that that Women Raping Men is a theme in these prior overflow Overflow works.  The MC of Large PonPon was abused by at least 2 older women.  And in PureMail at least in the OVA version Kei is Blackmailed and Raped by Yumi Matou, and it’s framed as traumatizing not comedic or harmless.

So yeah there is good material here, if that edited version were the official version I’d probably give it a higher rating.  But I also imagine like many VNs adapted with so little runtime the storytelling was also hurt by being condensed and trying to make everything fit one timeline.

Now let’s return to world building.

The Overflow Universe Family Tree is a bit of a Meme to those of us who know it exists.  But in a way PureMail’s connections to all that shows how perhaps not well thought out it actually is.  Again I like most English speakers have no first hand information about these games, I’m mostly trying to draw conclusions from the Overflow Fandom Wiki (I wish I didn't have to use Fandom but no one’s cloned this content on an alternative Wiki network.) [Update: A way around using Fandom kind of exists now.]

These PureMail OVAs are technically the only onscreen Anime appearance of Tomaru Sawagoe. In the games his onscreen appearances are all in the Radish Trilogy, only they have character designs for him, and even the first of them came out after these OVAs.  Going off the OVAs Kei’s father isn’t mentioned by name and there isn’t even any hint at that father not being who he gets the surname Ogata from.  The OVAs felt they needed to actually animate a flashback and in it the character design of Kei’s father has a generic White Trash Wife Beater type look and seems to be “Lower Class”.  Tomaru in the Radish games has a more distinct and flamboyant style and is very wealthy owning the titular restaurant chain and a hospital.

Basically Kei’s father being identified with the villain of the Radish series feels like a Retcon.

Online discussion of all these Overflow games focus on how they relate to School Days because only it ever became truly infamous in the general Anime community, especially in the Anglosphere.  So Tomaru Sawagoe is defined first and foremost as Makoto Itou’s father and all the games set before School Days are talked about as if they are prequels to School Days even though they were all made before School Days.

Snow Radish Vacation was made as a prequel, but to Large PonPon, Overflow’s first game.  The Inou and Sawagoe surnames originated there and then become the focus of Snow Radish Vacation; no surnames you recognize from the core cast of School Days are in either of those games.

Large PonPon, PureMail and School Days all seem like they are set in the then present of when they were made (1999, 2000 and 2005) like the average Visual Novel.  It’s only the Radish Vacation games that have to be period pieces for the Timeline to make sense.  But I have no way of knowing how good they are at feeling like period pieces, or if they even bothered to try.

Summer Radish Vacation was a sequel to Snow Radish Vacation, but Summer Radish Vacation 2 is in some ways more of a spin off then a sequel.  School Days I think was originally made without how it connects to the other games being all that set in stone.  In fact I’ve learned there was originally a family tree chart published by Overflow which made Sekai and Setsuna children of Tomaru rather than of Shun.

Summer Days' relationship to School Days is more of a completely alternate timeline rather than a Sequel or a Prequel.  But thanks to Shun’s role it’s actually more of a direct sequel to Summer Radish Vacation then Summer Radish Vacation 2 is.

Point is, the core world building starts with Large PonPon then goes through the Radish Games to end with the Days series.  PureMail and other Overflow games mentioned on the genealogy are largely afterthoughts.  The genealogy makes Ayumu the father of multiple PureMail characters (and Taisuke) and I really doubt the game was originally written with that in mind.

Update: Here's some more Timeline Speculation
