No movies are not worse now then they used to be.

People have always somewhat felt like the present quality of Cinema is the worst it's ever been, exactly how prominent that discourse is does have it's spikes and we seem to be in one right now.  "Justified" by how financially poorly the film industry did in 2023.  People are going to theaters less because of the lingering impact of the pandemic and normalization of streaming, I don't think it'll be permanent, I think it's gonna go up and down, but it definitely does not speak to the quality of 2023 films.

I even saw the title of a YouTube video I didn't watch explicitly saying "No you aren't just nostalgia blinded", I refused to even dignify such a claim with views.  I guarantee you in 20 years people will be Nostalgic for Phase 4 MCU and DCEU films and Live Action Disney remakes.

The current Golden Age people look back on is the 90s and early 2000s, but I unlike most my age don't just remember the movies from that time, I also remember the internet discourse around them, and it was essentially no different then now, only the details of the theories on why things got worse might have changed.

To an extent what percentage of movies are considered to be good or bad isn't actually viewed as being any different.  It's just that the "forgettable" movies of the past are forgotten and the old "bad" movies still considered bad people talk about in ways that emphasize their charm, how they're a product of their time made in ways you won't see today, or from a respected director who's fanboys refuse to see no value in even their "worst" films.  While everything today is just "soulless" focus tested corporate mandated garbage.

And people who insist on maintaining that the reevaluated films shouldn't be reevaluated blame it on Meme Culture, on people watching bad movies ironically and Memeing themselves into liking them.  And that issue may tie into a potentially entirely different thesis, I may write something about the concept of "So Bad it's good".  With movies like the Star Wars Prequels it is well documented that the people who like them always existed, the GenX haters just lost their control of internet discourse.

However an interesting case study here is The Mummy film from 1999, the people hyping it up as an unironically great example of the kind of 90s/early 2000s film they don't make them like anymore seemingly don't even know there ever was an Internet Echo chamber that considered it a very bad movie and an example of how 90s and early 2000s attempts to "rip off" Indiana Jones pale in comparison to the real thing.  My memory of the era is that people who liked the movies existed but GenXers who hated it for not being a pure Horror Movie also largely dominated Internet Group think.

There are plenty of films, even Hollywood Genre films in 2023 that are not all that controversial to consider good, the Super Mario Bros movie, Across The Spiderverse, Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves, each considered perfectly fun movies that at the very least succeeded at what they were going for.

Now as far as the movies that I liked just fine but that enough Internet Group think makes them be perceived as failures, no thesis about why current movies are so bad fits.  Peter Coffin's "Wookieepeditis" thesis doesn't explain The Flash which made Canon more flexible then ever.  And culture war stuff influencing both films and internet discourse about them isn't new either, it's just the exact terminology that has changed.

On the subject of Indiana Jones anyone who thinks Kingdom of The Crystal Skull is worth redeeming but not Dial of Destiny has no consistent logic, both are exactly parallel in how much they either follow or break from the formulae of the 80s Indiana Jones movies.

I'm also going to just assume Anime films aren't being considered in this Normie discourse since it's technically a completely different Industry.  But at any rate we got the best Detective Conan film in a decade, Maboroshi which I was not expecting but was awesome, a new Psycho-Pass movie that was great though I had issues with it's message which stem from those I always had even of the original show.  And a new Miyazaki film which I haven't seen and probably won't but most people seem to think lived up to the expectations.  I will see the Sailor Moon Cosmos films when they are Dubbed and I'm fairly confident they will be great.

There is a common claim some people make that children will enjoy everything they see and thus potentially be Nostalgic for it as Adults so the existence of very young people who liked something can never be a vindication.  Well I hated Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory as a kid, I have Anti-Nostalgia for that movie.  And it's not just that, even at my youngest there is plenty of stuff meant for my age demographic I saw and didn't enjoy.

My firm position is that if anyone liked something no matter how much I don't like it that vindicates it as being Good in some way, even children, especially children if they were even partially the target audience.

The problem with Nostalgia, the thing that can make it Toxic, isn't the positive feelings it provides you for your happy memories of the past, that is objectively what's good about it.  It's when it causes you to irrationally hate the present by seeing every difference as only for the worse.  So what bugs me now is people ironically using their critiques of Nostalgia to justify saying movies are worse now because Hollywood can't make anything that isn't pandering to some generation's Nostalgia.

New IPs are being created for future generations to be nostalgic for, it just may less often be movies and Triple A Video Games.  And the truth is I think these people are massively underestimating how much of what they're Nostalgic for was also in part made to appeal to the Nostalgia of their Parents or Grandparents or even older siblings.  Millennials have Nostalgia for Tiny Toons and Muppet Babies and Adult Swim Cartoons which were made by GenXers to parody cartoons they were Nostalgic for, and Degrassi's reboot which seems to have overshadowed the original.  Hell I have a lot of Nostalgia for watching Nick at Night reruns of Happy Days.

Justice League, Both Cuts are good movies

That’s my double Hot Take, each has their advantages and disadvantages.

I wasn’t expecting to have this reaction.  I’ve always known I’m not as much of a Snyder Fanboy as I sometimes come off to others, but clearly I myself was overestimating our alignment.  So much of what I liked about the Theatrical Cut that is not in the Snyder Cut I really assumed would be.

I’m quickly growing to have a similar relationship with Justice League as I do Superman II where my ideal hypothetical version of that movie combines elements of the Theatrical and Donner versions.  However the differences in Aesthetic Style here make doing a Fan Edit not nearly as easy.

I can say that while the Theatrical Cut should have been longer, 4 hours I would not have tolerated for a movie theater viewing where I can’t pause it.  No Superhero movie should in theaters be longer than The Ten Commandments.  However like the LOTR Extended Editions home viewing is different.  The same runtime as the Avengers movies would have been the ideal.

The best “superficial” praise I can give the Snyder Cut is that every scene or moment which is on paper the same in both versions is better executed here, better editing and cinematography and special effects and definitely a far more cohesive Musical Score.  And a lot of the longer scenes, and other stuff one might say adds nothing to the “plot” and may therefore get criticized as padding actually helps the film’s Gravitas and Characterization.

As far as the actual story goes the chief improvement in the Snyder Cut is everything involving Cyborg and his Father and the characters connected to them completely cut from the theatrical, he is the heart of the film and who was most done dirty by the theatrical cut.  Most of what I now dislike about the theatrical version are the alternate scenes with them.

However there is one more detail of the Theatrical Cut I would be completely adverse to including in an ideal hybrid cut and that is the Flash landing on Wonder Woman’s boobs gag.  One of the few Anime clichés I’m glad I (usually) don’t have to worry about in a Hollywood movie.

The Flash is overall also done better by The Snyder Cut, but I also like everything with him in the Theatrical besides that one gag I just mentioned.  However I don't consider major extra Flash scenes to be necessary.

Aquaman comes off about the same in both versions, which is good, he’s cool.

Steppenwolf I don’t care about either way.  He is different but I really don’t care about his greater depth.  As I said before in Super Team formation films I’m fine with the villain being just a plot device.  The DeSaad and Darkseid scenes I enjoyed as a Nerd, but I don’t think what they add to the film really matters, they were there to set up future films that still might never get made, and Darkseid is the kind of character I feel should be ominously mentioned for years before he's ever even glimpsed.

However what I would most prefer to be gone are the Injustice inspired bad future visions, and I now want that gone from BvS too.  I was hoping that storyline would be resolved by the end of this film.  I don’t want more Evil Superman BS, that was supposed to be done away with once this film finished Clark’s Hero's Journey.  It turns out Snyder was planning more than a Trilogy and that disappoints me.

The Theatrical version of Justice league for all it’s plot holes and imperfections is still a fun movie that gets most of the core characters right.  And compared to The Snyder Cut is far better as a Superman movie, or a Batman movie and sure as hell a better sequel to Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman films.

The Theatrical Version despite having less than half as much Runtime feels like it has twice as much humanity.  Patrick H Willems talked about how Whedon’s Avengers movies have more glimpses of the normal civilian population and their reactions to the Superheroes then the Russo films, and that same contrast exists here.

That Instagram video of the kids recording Superman at the beginning, that goon Batman uses to bait a Parademon, the Opening Credits sequence, having civilians around they need to protect during the big final battle, and other little moments right before cutting to the end credits.  All of that adds a lot of humanity to the theatrical version that I missed here.

I want to talk briefly about the Mustache controversy of the theatrical version.  People keep saying it's something you can’t not notice, except when I first saw it I hadn’t heard about any of this and I indeed didn’t notice it.  That one particular screenshot people like to meme to me just looks weird because of Cavil’s facial expression, in a way lots of freeze frames in a film will.

I hate the inclusion of the Black Superman Suit.  A lot of people think it's a requirement for a Superman returns from the Dead storyline, but this isn't a direct adaptation of Reign of The Supermen.  I would have been fine with it if it was only temporary like in those Comics, but him having it in the closing shirt rip shot symbolizes what I’ve already complained about and feel betrayed by.  I’m one of many who defended Snyder’s choices for Man of Steel and BvS on the grounds that it's Superman’s beginning.  Instead The Snyder Cut has revealed that Darker Edgier Superman was the long term plan.

With Batman I’ve already praised that scene where he coaches Barry and how much I liked that.  I also liked that Lois calming Superman down was Bruce’s plan, in the Theatrical Cut that’s the pay off to Barry’s future warning, in the Snyder Cut it only adds to that to set up a final pay off later.  I also like when he says to Alfred that Clark is more Human than he is.

In the Snyder Cut Diana kills that British Terrorist, this isn’t exactly contradicted in the Theatrical but it's clear that’s something Whedon chose to cut because he knew it didn’t fit with how Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movie ended.  A lot of people have been praising the moment with the little girl soon after saying “how could they cut that?” they aren’t looking at the context.  There was no way to include that while still hiding that Snyder had filmed Wonder Woman killing someone.  In addition to that I also don’t like her being so determined to decapitate Steppenwolf either.

I also miss all of the interactions between Bruce and Diana unique to the Theatrical Cut.  I do not interpret them Romantically, Alfred is just being a naggy parent who wants grandkids.  I like that they talked about Steve Trevor, something only briefly alluded to in the Snyder Cut.  I like that Bruce is a dick in one scene but not going to Frank Miller levels.  I like that he sees Diana as the one who should actually lead the team.

As stand alone works of art The Snyder Cut is more “Auteur”, but both were in truth collaborative projects.  I appreciate both and I hope the Theatrical version is never buried and forgotten.

The Justice League movie was a Ten out of Ten

I know I don't exactly have a reputation as someone who's praise for DCEU films means much.  But I did have conflicted feeling towards MOS and BvS.  That conflict is gone here.

They finally got Superman right.

Wonder WOman was still awesome.

Batman was dope as usual

The Flash was used pretty well, since I gave up on the TV show, Ezra is my Barry Allen now.

Aquaman and Cyborg weren't bad either.

Stay thorough the credits, DC finally did a full all the way after the Credits scene.

DC making a Flashpoint movie

I'm awfully late in reacting to this.  It apparently became known back in July.  I would have commented on it in the Zack Snyder post I did last month if I'd known about it, as it's further evidence DC probably isn't going to involve him their films anymore anyway.

The overall reputation of Flashpoint is that people love the story itself, but hate the New52 that it in Kayfabe created.  I actually have my issues with the Flashpoint story even as a stand alone, chiefly how I feel it assassinated Diana and Arthur's characters.  But there is good stuff in it, and I hope Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Thomas Wayne again.

I have enjoyed every DCEU movie so far.  But I have issues with it, and a lot of that is it's New52 influence.  Maybe the movie Flashpoint will be like the opposite, it'll change this depressing New52 inspired universe into the DC Universe I remember.

Some people think part of the plan is to replace Ben Afleck as Batman with someone younger.  I'm tired of always getting young Batman.

I also would have liked to see an Ezra Miller solo Flash film.  But I get that they are not going to be able to complete with the TV Show in anything other then having the resources necessary to do Flashpoint more accurately.

It could go either way.  We'll have to wait and see.

DC TV fall 2016 reactions

I'm afraid I'm not likely to be regularly updateing my thoughts on the DC shows this season.  I shall share a few I have now.

I'm giving Gotham a second chance mainly for Jamie Chung, I love her.

Supergirl is still going strong, the first two episodes were perfect, the third was really great but I cringed at all the fawning over the President.

The Flash has me concerned, I've never been fond of Flashpoint and not just because of the New 52.

I stopped watching Arrow.

Legends is hit and miss still.

Some predictions about upcoming Comic Book adabtations

I'm not claiming to have any inside info, these are just my wild guesses bases on the evidence available to everyone.

The Flash Season 3.

1. I think we'll learn that on Earth-Three where JWS is Jay Garrick, that Dinah Drake, Laurel and Sara's mother from Arrow, is The Black Canary.

2. I think at the end of season 3 Barry Allen will "die", and Wally West will take over as The Flash.  I think WB will want that so while their featuring Ezra Miller's Barry Allen in two movies that will come out during season 4 the TV Flash will be different.  But regardless I think that would be a good move, because that's part of the Comics history of The Flash.  Obviously a door will kept open for Barry to return, perhaps in the 100th Episode in the middle of Season 5.

Wonder Woman

1. The woman with the weird face in the trailer is Paula Van Gunther.

2. Bookend scenes set in the present will revolve around Diana talking to Carol Ferris (Christina Wren), where reference to Hal Jordan disappearing might be made.

Justice League.

1. Superman will return in about the middle of the film, but he'll instantly assume leadership, not unlike in Reign of The Supermen.

2. Green Lantern will show up at the very end, with maybe hints of his existence being made earlier.

3. Deathstroke will be in Justice League, he's who Batman will fight while the Superpowered characters fight aliens form Apokolips.  That's what the footage we saw is from.

4. Enchantress will appear, that's why Bruce also got her file also at the end of Suicide Squad.

5. We'll learn the father of Eisenberg's Luthor is still alive, but probably not see him yet.

Spiderman Homecoming

1. Zendaya is Michelle Gonzalez and/or White Tiger, not Mary Jane.

2. They will wait till he's in Collage to have him meet Gwen or MJ.  What I want to see when we get there is Gwen and MJ being friends.

The Flash movie

Will flop and not get a sequel

Aquaman

Will be a hit and get a sequel

Batfleck

1. The first movie will be a version of Under The Red Hood with Arkham Knight influence.  Harley and Joker will both appear.  Mat Damon will play a villain replacing Black Mask's role, maybe Hush, and he'll hire Deathstroke.

2. Then in the second Justice League movie.  Bruce will be "killed" by the Omega Sanction and the next Batfleck film will be Battle for The Cowl with aspects of Knightfall.

Update: The Official Deathstroke announcement came out right after I posted this.  It kinda doesn't change anything, we know he'll be in Batfleck now, but I hope he's not the main or only villain.

Season 2 of The Flash

Spoiler Warning!!!!

Well I was wrong on the real Jay Garrick being a new actor.  It's fine, JWS fits the costume well.

I'm not fond of them ending with the Flashpoint set up.  I was really hoping the end of Season 1 meant we weren't going to go there.

It's not normal for me to say this, but the second really was inferior to the first.

I highly doubt they actually wrote the first 10-12 episode planning for that Jay to be Zoom.  And when they went there, it felt way to much to me like repeating the same basic "twist" of season 1, the mentor is the villain.

The show was still a lot of fun, unlike Arrow which has become indistinguishable from the film verse.

The Flash update

I've been saying there is a real Jay Garrick but he won't be played by the same actor.  And I thik the thing about Henry's mother's maiden name confirms that.

I think it's safe to say Wally and Jessie just became Speedsters.

I found the ending really compelling, then the preview shows Barry will be there next week.  I was hoping the show actually was going to spend awhile acting like Barry was really killed off.

The Flash Versus Zoom

This episode did a lot of stuff.

The Supergirl Crossover seems to have happened during it.

Zoom used Time Travel to create a duplicate.

I thought for a minute the Man in the Iron Mask was Zolomon's father.  Now I'm thinking he's the Real Jay Garrick.

And the Star Wars conversation mentioned the Midichlorenes, they showed respect unto the Prequels.

Tuesday TV Reactions

I decided to watch The Flash at 7 and wait for 9:00 for PLL.

The Flash was good this Week, nothing super special however.

The Legends of Tomorrow preview did what it needed to do, I'm still not super interested in the premise.

Kevin Smith's show hyping the DC Movies was fun.  And that Suicide Squad trailer rocked, that song was a brilliant choice, that I personally now always link it to Neon Genesis Evangleion in my mind just made me love it more.

Charlotte's Web was an enjoyable Episode, PLL quickly getting back to what it does well.  I'm still unsure if we're going to get another -A or not.

So that was my Tuesday.  When Rebels returns I'm contemplating adding that to my TV reactions plate, thing is when it's episodes first air I tend to be listening to Flash TV Talk and Panel to Screen live.

What if Killer Frost is actually Caitlin from another Earth?

That's a theory I've been thinking of.

You may think "that's be a cop out" but no, nothing done with the Caitlin we know at all hints at her going down a Dark Past.

If someone had watched Season 1 of Smallville genuinely ignorant of the Superman mythos, that Lex Luther had the potential to turn to the dark-side was still obvious.

Same with the Star Wars Prequels, even if you showed them to someone who legitimately knew nothing about the OT, the foreshadowing on Anakin's potential dark future was still there.

And even using a non Prequel example, Faith in Season 3 of Buffy, she was set up as the Dark Slayer from the start.  But she didn't turn evil till the season was like 2 thirds over.

Caitlin Snow is a much more obscure figure, people who are ignorant of her being a villain in the comics are not so rare.  To any of them the Caitlin we've been following suddenly turning evil would seem like an ass pull.

I don't have any particular reactions to the latest episode.  It was good.

I really Geeked out this episode

Multiverse, Earth 1, Earth 2, 52, it was a good day to be a Nerd.

So is that the Harison Wells of Earth 2 or a third Earth?

So some kind of War was mentioned, looks like Earth 2 might have had an alternate WWII.

Looks like Stein might be having Firestorm related issues.

I'm starting #MarkyMarkMartin

The Flash second season permier

I don't have much to say, it was good like I expected it to be.

The Flash may remains the most consistently good Superhero TV show, it all depends how Supergirl goes.  I'm not excited for the new CW spin off Green Arrow I expect will be better then last season but I'm not expecting much.

This set up on Zoom is exactly like how they set up Moriarty in the first episode of Sherlock.

I may still post on Gotham here more consistently because the Batman mythos interest me more.  But that The Flash is the better show I don't expect to change.

I hope this Garrick is linked to WWII (even if it's a different timeline WWII), I didn't like how Smallvile's JSA had no WWII connection.

The Flash First Season was Awesome

It was great, it's a DC show that afraid of the Comic Booky elements.

I still can't put into words my thoughts, but I wanna get it on record here.

Can't wait for Season 2, but till then I got PLL.

Dammit DC, stop doing this.

I've been catching up on lost time on my none DC related Blogging subjects while trying to find out how to put into word how wowed I am by closing episodes of The Flash's First Season.

And then I read this.

When the reports that the movie was why Deadshot was killed off came out I chose not to believe them, now I'm pissed.

I expressed how excited I was about what DC is doing on Television.  I said I was glad they are separate universes both from each other and the Cinematic Universe.

But the entire point of WHY I was glad for that was that we could see different takes on different characters.

I thought we were done with the days of the Bat embargo and Smallville having all kinds of limitations on it.

I'm fine with the notion that the big three, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, can't appear on TV shows (in their fully formed forms) as long as everything else is fair game.

I'm sick of DC always giving the movies first dibs, and then being afraid TV will cause confusion.  The know the animated projects we don't get confused by, or the Comics themselves which aren't even all the same canon due to DC bringing the Multiverse back.

Arrow had a 5 year plan mapped out in advance.  I'm sure not every detail, but a lot of basic things.  And I haven't exactly been thrilled with much of what they've done each season. But to then because a movie is green lite take away assets they were banking on is just plain mean.

And they are being illogically selective.  The Flash is the lead and title character of both a TV show and am upcoming Movie, and both Flashes are Barry Allen.  They aren't afraid that will be confusing.  But recurring characters are confusing?  One Floyd Lawton is white and one is black but they are afraid people won't be able to tell the difference?

This happens endlessly with Iconic characters who are no longer copyrighted.  We have lots of Sherlock Holmeses and Draculas and Frankensteins all over pop culture.  But we can only handle one Harley Quinn or Deadshot?

I don't even think Harley Quinn on Arrow would make sense, she can't exist without The Joker, The Joker can't exist without Batman, and I prefer no Batman or Superman in the DCWverse.

But it's the principle of the thing.

So I'm obviously not saying I want each television DC Universe to have one of every character.  But there are certain DC characters who it's in their DNA to be not limited to any one subsection of the DCU, Amanda Waller, assassins like Deadshot, organizations like HIVE.  The League of Assassins, while it's head is mainly a Batman villain it does have tentacles all over.  These are lesser known characters they have a created a great chance to show in a short time how versatile they are by letting different writers do different things.

Instead it looks like the reason the Teen Titans won't have Roy Harper or Wally West is because a different channel has dibs on them.  Having Dick and Barbara won't be seen as stepping on Gotham's toes however.  (And no Donna or Cassie because of weird contract stuff concerning Marston and Wonder Woman, but I suspect that'll be the same for the movies.)

Maybe their logic is that it's because they're lesser known then the big 2 and their supporting cast? We already have multiple Alfreds and Robins and Batgirls and Jimmy Olsens as cultural icons, from the movies alone before this new string of shows started.  But Roy Harper might seem to non comic readers that he was written for..... I forget the actors name.

But Gotham and Arrow both had their own Dollmaker without it being an issue?  They were in different seasons though, and now they're both dead.

It's all so stupid.

Look DC, I'm excited for your Movies, and for your TV shows.  I have a lot of faith in where you're going now in-spite of past problems, and have expressed that excitement to your harshest critics.  But if you continue to be afraid that some of your properties can't handle both, while consistently giving first dips to the medium that we actually spend less time in.  Your going to neuter a lot of your potential.

I was mentioned quite a big in the latest FlashTVTalk

For the Grodd Episode.

I promoted my latest theories in the Live Chat while it was recording.  Only the Cobalt Blue one came up, they got it wrong at first and I pretended to be more mad then I really was for a moment.  Then they got it right and kept apologizing.  It was kind of funny.

Just to be clear, I never hold a Grudge.

And I also coined EddieObard

Flash Theories

First about Grodd.

I don't think this is the real Grodd exactly, or perhaps more accurately not the final Grodd.  Let me Explain.

This Grodd was still too dumb to me, maybe that's because it's still his Origin, but I don't know.

Many people may be upset about removing Ape City in exchange for making Grodd another product of the Accelerator.  But here is my idea.

I think this Grodd will somehow get time traveled back to the distant past and become the founder of Ape City.  And then in a future season from that will come the proper Grodd.  Someone named after the City's founder.

Now unto Eddie Thawn.  I do not believe he will become Cobalt Blue, I think all HGobard's talk about him being "almost completely forgotten" says he's not a big player.

Question is, if he is such a failure, what's the one thing that left him still a little remembered?  Many are remembered only for being the Lover of someone far more important.

I think Cobalt Blue will as usual be Barry's twin, but this time it's a female twin.  And she becomes Eddie's future Wife and also ancestor of Eobard.

One more thing, I ship SnowWest now.

More on how wrong the perceived difference between Marvel and DC movies is

On both sides it's the Marvel Vs DC people doing this the most, or at least they do it to the one they don't like.  As someone who likes all the movies but a very few (none in either current Cinematic Universe) I feel I have a more unbiased perception.

First off since Guardians of the Galaxy came out it's like people have been judging the entire MCU based on that film, and really a flanderized version of it, as if nothing was taken seriously and it had no depth, which is clearly wrong.  No other MCU film is as comedic, the amount of humor in them isn't really much more then you get in the DC films, DC just doesn't put the jokes in the trailers as much.

And the people praising what Marvel does over DC, go on about DC being ashamed of their properties because they seemingly tone things down to make them more realistic.  But the MCU films have also watered things down to make them less comicbooky, Zola wasn't actually a living Brain like Krang, the Guardians of the Galaxy had all the most Superpowered members of it's team removed. and the Collector was completely weakened.  Plenty in the MCU has felt Nolanized, not to mention Mandarin.

And of course the current DCCU only has one movie we've seen.  And the way I see it every glimpse we've seen of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad has undermined the notion that DC is afraid to embrace the flamboyant aspects of their Universe.  It's funny actually, all the talk about how DC was running their movies by being to realistic, and now the SS pics come out and everyone is whining how unrealistic it looks.  They're clearly fully embracing the Magick of their universe way faster then it's taken Marvel.  And it's clear that Snyder was being held back from his more stylish style for MOS and isn't anymore for BvS.

I've even seen some claim that Ironically DC is less dark and serious then Marvel in the Comics and so find DC taking the darker rout for Movies a rejection of everything DC stood for.

That depends on what period you're talking about, if you're talking about the Silver and to a lesser extent Bronze age then yes, that's true.  The times when DC was loosing to Marvel in sales.

But the DC Comics I fell in love with as a child of the 90s and early 2000s were very dark.  Even the ones that had Superman.  Identity Crisis, OMAC Project, Infinite Crisis, the Teen Titans under both Wolfman/Perez and Geof Johns.  Batman getting his back broken, Superman dying and coming back, Hal going crazy, these are the stories that made me a DC fanatic.  And for Batman stuff like Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive and War Games, and Under the Red Hood.  In the 90s was when Marvel was massively loosing to DC in sales.

The MCU does have plenty of darkness and seriousness.  And MOS had plenty of humor.

I've also seen haters of the current DC Cinematic Universe saying DC is doing it right on TV, and then putting Arrow and The Flash together just because they're technically in the same universe.  The Flash has been great, fantastic, marvelous.  Arrow however to me has been doing exactly what the DC Cinematic Universe is being falsely accused of.

If you're gonna refute that assessment with "Arrow included the Lazuarus pit for Ra's and the movies didn't". Those movies aren't in this Cinematic Universe, that's the problem, Nolan's style that was perfect for Batman but not so ideal for others is being assumed to still rule the upcoming DC films.  The things about MOS that were accused of coming from Nolan are clearly gone from Batman V Superman based on what we've seen so far.  And I don't think those things were actually Nolan's fault anyway, Nolan's movies certainly didn't desaturate their colors.  Of course the "Man of Steel in Color" video on Youtube is a fraud, MOS wasn't that desaturated as they claimed there.  But I do wish it had been brighter and it looks like BvS will be.

Having the Lazurus pit doesn't help Arrow's take on Ra's and the League of Assasins since they removed most of his exotic charisma, and has all the League members wearing the same boring looking costume.  And they removed his Eco Terrorist motivation and have him pretty much being Evil simply to be Evil.

Arrow had a strict rule against Super Powers until sharing a continuity with The Flash was thrust upon them.  Their Suicide Squad contained none of the truly Flamboyant members.  They've pretty much treated Oliver as if he were Batman, Oliver is not such a grim anti-social character in the Comics.  And they refuse to give Black Canary her authentic costume with the Iconic Fishnets, instead just making her look like a slighter more prudish Catwoman.  And of course they are taking their sweet time letting Ray Palmer shrink.

The recent SS pics show the Cinematic Universe is much more willing to embrace truly Comic Book like Costumes.  Harley Quinn will have more then one costume in the film, I too am not fond of the New52 based one in the first pics we saw, Arkham City had the ideal Harley costume to me.  But regardless it is from the comics.  And their look for Enchantress is less realistic then any form I've seen her have in the comics.

And sometimes the "toned down" version of the character, is more like how they originally were before later writers started exaggerating them.  That's why I love this Killer Cros look, I'm sick of the overdone Killer Croc we see in the Arkham games.  On the other hand, Echantress's look reminds me of what I don't like about Poison Ivy in the Arkham games.

What really bums me out about the BrosWatchPLLToo duo being so firmly on this DCCU hating bandwagon, is that I know they like me care a great deal about women being treated better in genre fiction.  The DC has had a horrible track record with this in the Comic all through the New52 and even a little before.  But in other media right now, especially with movies they are doing far better then Marvel.

Marvel continues to refuse to include Black Widow and Gamorra in the merchandising, while DC is making a new line for young Girls, I just hope it corresponds with better female representation in their main marketing lines.

The MCU is taking till Phase 3.5 to give us a female lead Solo film, and we know from leaked emails their CEO has no confidence in female lead Superhero films.  With DC we'll have Wonder Woman before then even though they got started later.  WW will be the 4th film total, 3rd after it was confirmed we're getting a universe, and before the first JL film.  Gail Simon said someone she trusts told her WW will be the best part of BvS, and I always knew Gadot would do awesomely.

Marvel kept the full Smurfette principle for it's first two team films and then just now upgraded to 2 women in a team of 9.  Suicide Squad will unfortunately have twice as many men as women, but at least DC has more then 2 women on the team right from the start.

And they aren't all White.  Age of Ultron featured all of the core 3's Black Friends in small roles, how diverse of them.

I have my concerns with both DC and Marvel's upcoming plans, but I remain excited for both.
